What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs due to the formation of blood clots in the veins of the limbs or extremities (arms and legs). DVT is a concern because it can cause life-threatening complication of pulmonary embolism.

In pulmonary embolism, a blood clot from these deep veins breaks free, reaches there & blocks an artery in the lungs. Both of these together are called venous thromboembolism.

What is DVT?

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs due to the formation of blood clots (or Thrombus) in the deep veins of the limbs or extremities (arms and legs). Blood clots usually develop in the veins when the blood thickens and forms a clump.

Prolonging DVT treatment can cause life-threatening medical complications such as Pulmonary Embolism. In pulmonary embolism, blood clots from the impacted deep veins in the legs break free and travel upwards in the body, and, can block a pulmonary artery in the lungs.
