Fibroids are tissue growth, usually found in the uterus of women in their childbearing age. This condition can be treated medically, surgically as well as using non-surgical procedures depends on location and size of it. Fibroids are found in the uterus of women in their childbearing age. These fibroids can be more than one and grow in size, with time and different speed. While they may be asymptomatic initially, depending on the size and location of the fibroid in the uterus they show symptoms later. Women may feel the following symptoms related to uterine fibroid • Excessive bleeding and prolonged periods. • Lower abdominal distension / bloating sensation • Prolonged Infertility • Pelvic pain and pressure, difficulty in micturition or frequent micturition when it gets bigger
There are different treatment options for uterine fibroids treatment. Therefore proper case analysis is important to decide the best course of treatment for uterine fibroid in aurangabad. An ultrasound is the first test taken. It guides the gynaecologists and patients to decide the right uterine fibroid treatment.
Birth control pills are taken by patients to treat uterine fibroids medically. These pills reduce heavy bleeding and the GnRH hormonal analogues can shrink the fibroids. However, this initiates an artificial menopause in this medical line of treatment. The fibroids also regrow and symptoms return when these oral hormonal medication is stopped.
This is a Common treatment where only the fibroid is removed (Myomectomy) or the entire uterus is removed (Hysterectomy) surgically or laparoscopically depending on the patient, location and size of fibroids. Surgical treatments usually have lengthy healing process and recovery time besides hospitalization period. However if patient wish to have pregnancy in future then that is not possible in future as uterus is removed.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (Non-surgical Recent Treatment)
Fibroid Embolization (UFE), also called as Uterine Artery Fibroid Embolization in Mumbai is a minimally invasive procedure done under local anaesthesia, using fluoroscopy DSA guidance. An Interventional Radiologists inserts a thin different shaped catheter inside a thigh artery and guides it to the uterine artery arising from iliac artery. Tiny round micro particles called PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol or gel foam) are injected into the blood vessels of the uterine artery for embolization. These particles block blood flow to the fibroids, causing them to shrink. The PVA particles remain permanently at the fibroid site. After a uterine fibroid/artery embolization, there is immediate relief from heavy bleeding caused by fibroid. Pressure and size related symptoms take about a few weeks or months to disappear.
Since the uterine artery embolization cuts off blood and necessary nutrients for fibroid growth, they gradually shrink over a period of 3 – 6 months. Once the fibroids have shrunk, they do not grow back.
Advantages of Uterine Fibroid Embolization
• Minimally invasive – Uterine artery embolization treatment in nagpur is a non-surgical treatment
• Fast recovery – 1 or 2 days hospital stay and women return to normal within days
• Significant improvement in quality of life – Relief from heavy bleeding, pressure, and other symptoms
• Uterine sparing – Fibroid embolization keeps the uterus intact preserving hormonal function, and fertility in women of childbearing age
• Safe and non-toxic – No drugs or hormones
A uterine fibroid (leiomyoma) is a specific type of tumour that occurs in the muscle cells of the uterus, a condition affecting approximately 20 to 40 percent of premenopausal women. However, only 5 to 10 percent of premenopausal women actually develop symptoms due to fibroids. Uterine fibroid embolization avoids surgery, preserves the uterus, controls symptoms and improves quality of life.
Non Invasive Treatment for Fibroid
To treat uterine fibroids, interventional radiologists can deliver minimally invasive treatments for fibroid with less risk, less pain and less recovery time than traditional surgery with still ability to retain future pregnancy and uterus as well.
Uterine Artery Embolization (UFE)
Fibroids require a pure arterial blood supply (for oxygen and nutrients) to continue to grow. To treat the uterine fibroids, an interventional radiologists, also called as endovascular surgeon performs uterine artery fibroid embolization. With UFE, the interventional radiologist in Aurangabad can access the artery supplying the tumour through a small incision in the groin or near wrist joint to gain arterial sheath access. A catheter, or small tube, is placed inside the femoral artery and is guided to the fibroid’s blood supply. Once the catheter is in the proper position, the interventional radiologist releases micro PVA particles to block the small vessel and deprive the fibroid of nutrients, resulting in the fibroid shrinking in size slowly and completely. Approximately nine out of 10 patients who undergo uterine fibroid embolization in Pune will experience significant improvement, or their symptoms will go away completely and immediately. For remaining 5 -10 % patient feel slow recovery over few weeks time.
